Are You Out of Step with Fashion? :

Oct 22, 2007

Are you “older” and feel like the fashion world has left you behind? Do you shudder when you see styles you wore 20 years ago come back… again? Like leggings and skinny jeans? You have already been there, done that. What’s the use? If you feel fashion and style should be left for the teenagers -- I’m here to say, you’re wrong.

You still have plenty of game; you just don’t know it. You're older now and can do whatever you please. Any style or current trend can be adapted to fit you. Look all around for inspiration -- it’s everywhere. Pay attention more closely to life all around you…style inspiration can be found everyday. Here are the top 10 ways to help you revitalize your style:

1. Lace up the mall walkers. Go to the mall, but leave the wallet at home. Go looking -- not shopping. Check the storefronts to find styles that you love.

2. Get glued to the boob tube. Watching TV just to see what characters are wearing is a good enough reason. Check out what “older” women are wearing… the women on CSI, Oprah, The View and Live with Regis and Kelly. These women are older and have different body shapes, so check out how they're dressed. 3. People who need people. Go people-watching. Admittedly, this is one of my favorite things to do. Go to the mall, park or cafe and watch what people are wearing. Critique what they are wearing and if you think it’s working, let it inspire you.

4. Sign on the dotted line. Join the mailing lists of stores you love. Even if you can’t afford to buy from them, they'll deliver new styles each season.

5. Go ask Alice. Or any other trusted friend, sister or those whose style you admire. There is nothing like getting inspiration for your style from a real person.

6. Go to the glossies. Take a look at magazines. A variety of magazines will show women of all ages in a variety of styles for many body types.

7. Talk with your teen. Ask her for fashion ideas. It’s worth a try -- teens are walking billboards of style for everything being sold. Have her critique looks that you put together yourself -- but don't take her criticism too personally.
