Have you ever watched one of those TV shows showcasing the spacious, impeccably organized and serene homes of the rich and/or famous? Beautifully blended colors…gorgeously green plants…whirlpools in the master bathroom and fountains in the patio: Oh, how I crave (almost as much as chocolate!) to reside in such a tranquil, soothing haven! Recently, I was tuned into one such envy-making series when the host mentioned that the architect and interior designer whose homes were featured in this episode practiced the principles of feng shui (pronounced "fung-shway"). I had heard that term mentioned before – but something about those particular houses resonated within me. So I began to seek more information about feng shui. Ellen Whitehurst is a well-known feng shui and alternative lifestyle expert, as well as an affiliate member of the American Society of Interior Designers. She began practicing holistic medicine and alternative therapies more than a decade ago, which led her to feng shui and other modalities, traditions and customs that create fortune and luck for the layman, she says. Among her current credentials: authoring a monthly column in Redbook that blends feng shui and astrology, called “Shuistrology.” The power of this practice: “Whatever the stars have in store for you can be enhanced by using standard -- but really efficient -- feng shui cures and adjustments,” Whitehurst says. However, feng shui is decidedly different than astrology. More than 5,000 years old, the feng shui tradition asserts that whatever you put around your outer space or environment mirrors or influences the inner one, Whitehurst says. If you are challenged in one area and cannot meet those challenges from within yourself , focus on tackling that area from the outside, be it your home, your bedroom, your car or your office. “Imagine that simply by addressing the Love and Romance area of your bedroom, you could also then address the relationships (or lack thereof) in your life!” Whitehurst says. “What a concept! Use the space around you to bring luck and fortune to the space inside you!” |
