Scales: Weigh Your Options :Sep 07, 2007Every time I think of a weight scale, images of my Dad come to mind. I remember when he was absolutely determined to lose 20 pounds. He would hop on the scale in the morning, step off, get back on, step off, get back on -- this would go on for what appeared to be an eternity. Sound familiar? A weight scale can be a very valuable tool . However, like any tool, it should be used correctly and constructively. I don't agree with the current notion that we should never weigh ourselves. For most people, that’s a way to avoid reality. It's OK to weigh yourself -- just limit it to once or twice per week. What about the scale itself? Is there anything you should be looking for when you invest in one? Generally, you'll need to start at about $25 for a somewhat decent scale. However, you may be better off investing just a bit more for a unit that will be accurate and longer lasting. Here's what various price ranges will get you:
If you're willing to invest another $10, I really like the Tanita Model HD-372. It can support up to 400 pounds and has a lithium digital glass display. The large display is easy to read, and the unit offers a sleek, contemporary design. I usually lose someone’s attention when I go beyond the $60.00 range for a scale, but I’m listing a few others because one may be most appropriate for you or a loved one. |
