Scales: Weigh Your Options :

Sep 07, 2007

Every time I think of a weight scale, images of my Dad come to mind.

I remember when he was absolutely determined to lose 20 pounds. He would hop on the scale in the morning, step off, get back on, step off, get back on -- this would go on for what appeared to be an eternity.

Sound familiar?

A weight scale can be a very valuable tool . However, like any tool, it should be used correctly and constructively.

I don't agree with the current notion that we should never weigh ourselves. For most people, that’s a way to avoid reality.

It's OK to weigh yourself -- just limit it to once or twice per week.

What about the scale itself? Is there anything you should be looking for when you invest in one?

Generally, you'll need to start at about $25 for a somewhat decent scale. However, you may be better off investing just a bit more for a unit that will be accurate and longer lasting. Here's what various price ranges will get you:

  • $25 -- This price range gets you your basic, traditional dial meter. Health-O-Meter offers the model 175LB, which can support up to 330 pounds and has an easy-to-read dial and non-slip mat. You won’t get the accuracy of a digital scale, but it gets the job done for those watching their budget.

  • $35 -- The Tanita model HS-301 is a good buy in this price range. It’s a Solar Digital scale, meaning it has a built-in solar cell that draws power from ordinary household light. It has a large LCD display, can support up to 330 pounds, offers a toe-tap reset button, never needs batteries and offers a large platform. For most people, this is all you’d really ever need, and Tanita is known for high-quality products.

  • $50 -- Once again, Tanita is a good buy in the price range. The Tanita Model HD-317 can support up to 330 pounds and offers memory storage for the previous weights of up to five people. It’s great for several people who want to track their weight-loss history. In fact, it offers a two-line display that tells you your current weight as well as your previous weight -- very helpful for those tracking progress. It can weigh in both pounds and kilograms and has a larger display than the HS-301 model. This unit does require two AA batteries, unlike the first model.

If you're willing to invest another $10, I really like the Tanita Model HD-372. It can support up to 400 pounds and has a lithium digital glass display. The large display is easy to read, and the unit offers a sleek, contemporary design.

I usually lose someone’s attention when I go beyond the $60.00 range for a scale, but I’m listing a few others because one may be most appropriate for you or a loved one.
