Choosing the Right Colors :

Aug 25, 2007

Ever feel like you’re choosing a crayon from a huge box of Crayolas when shopping for cosmetics? With so many make-up colors to choose from, who knows if the shades you select are ideal for your face? Karim Orange, two-time Emmy-nominated celebrity makeup artist ( www.KarimOrange.com ), also known as “The Makeup Activist,” offers up her best advice for deciding on the right hue just for you.

All Eyes on You
“Women of all eye colors need to start with a strong neutral palette, consisting of soft browns, beiges, peaches, ivories, and taupes,” Karim says. She suggests purchasing a multicolor compact -- Christian Dior and L’Oreal both have some great ones -- that includes a variety of such shades.

To define the eyes, an accent color also should be added. "Try keeping the accent color as complementary to your eye color as possible, for maximum effect, using shadows and soft liners,” Karim recommends. Great accent colors for green eyes are forest greens and plums. For blue eyes, use navy blues and slate grays. Brown eyes will benefit from forest greens, bronzes and golds. To complete the look, brush on plum mascara for green eyes, medium brown mascara for blue eyes, and black or navy blue mascara for brown eyes.

Sure, makeup can improve the way you look in minutes, but would you like to look amazing -- even when you first wake up in the morning? Love Your Lips
While many women consider lipstick their most important cosmetic, they may not be aware of which shades work best with specific skin tones.

According to Karim, fair or ivory faces look fabulous with daytime lipcolor in pink-beiges, light to medium peaches and light mauves, while, for nighttime, a caramel lip gloss works beautifully.

For ladies with olive skin tone, sheer golds, pinks (especially with a touch of gold frost), peaches and light to medium browns can pretty up a daytime pout. For evening, try a rich, bronze gloss.

Darker complexions can pucker up by day with bronzes, medium browns, berries and brick browns. When night falls, switch to burgundies, purple gloss or try adding a pink gloss just in the center of your favorite lip color.

You’re Blushing!
“Remember with blush, less is more,” Karim says, reminding us that cheek color works best when applied softly, for a healthy glow. Additionally, selecting a hue that matches your complexion will also help in achieving a natural look.
