Crafting Celebrity Curls :

Aug 25, 2007

Lately, I've seen a lot of celebrities with long, wavy hair that looks like they just came back from the beach, but more styled. I’d like to try that out on myself, but I’m not sure where to start. How do I get this look?

Sexy, wavy locks are easy to achieve and look great on just about anyone, whether your hair is straight, curly, fine, short or long. First start out with damp, towel-dried hair. To avoid frizzing, use a wide-tooth comb to get any knots out. You can also use a leave-in conditioner before combing through the hair to make it glide through the strands smoother.

Next, spray on a lightweight, alcohol-free texturizing product, such as Frederik Fekkai Wave Creating Spray ($19.50, sephora.com ). This gives volume and creates a “piecey” look. It’s also important to use a product without alcohol, which will dry out the hair leaving it looking like straw.Once you’ve applied the wave spray, you can use a hairdryer with a diffuser and scrunch the hair, further reinforcing the texture and wave. However, if you have some time, the best way to create long-lasting waves is to divide the hair into 1½ inch sections and twist from the ends up. Then wrap the twisted section around two fingers, again from the ends up, and secure to the head with a pin. Repeat all over the head and let dry for a few hours. You can also do this the night before and sleep on it.

If you have hair that is shoulder-length or longer, you can also divide the hair into two or three sections and braid each one. Once the hair is dry, unravel the pieces and loosen them up with your fingers.

Finally, use a 1 ½ inch curling iron and take random pieces to curl. By varying the texture of the wave between the previous step and the use of a curling iron, you’ll achieve that tousled, wavy look but at the same time still polished and coiffed.

To seal in moisture and shine, use a glossing product like Neutrogena Triple Moisture Healing Shine Serum ($6.99, drugstore.com ). Squeeze a small amount, about the size of a nickel, into the palm of your hand. Rub hands together to distribute the product and lightly run the serum through the hair, careful to not pull the curl too much. Lastly, mist on a light hold hairspray, which will help this style to last throughout the day, and probably to the next morning.

What’s great about this look is that it doesn’t need a lot of maintenance after you’re done. If your curls are falling flat, simply re-mist the wave spray and scrunch!
