Easy Home Remedies for Minor Injuries :Aug 25, 2007There are a wide range of minor injuries and illnesses that are annoying, distracting and sometimes downright painful, but on the other hand, usually don't seem important enough to warrant a visit to the doctor. Never fear! Help is here in the form of this concise little guide to clever, quick and easy home remedies that even Grandma might not have known about. Just print it out and keep it your medicine cabinet for easy reference. Athlete's Foot -- There are several effective household treatments for this. Tea tree oil dabbed between the toes is soothing and effective. But perhaps even more effective is garlic. According to traditional Chinese medicine, you crush a few cloves of garlic and let them soak in a few ounces of olive oil for a day or two. Then strain out the garlic and apply the oil twice daily. Wear socks to minimize the mess (and smell).Tinnitus -- Tinnitus is the fancy medical term for ringing in the ears. You can try a number of things to help relieve it. First, consider how much aspirin you tend to take. Taking too much aspirin is associated with tinnitus. Conversely, a deficiency of zinc can cause it as well. Increase your intake of zinc-rich foods such as spinach, asparagus, string beans and Brussels sprouts. Sesame seeds are also recommended. Psst… Aren't secrets fun? We have the secret to weight loss. Next time it happens to you, quickly grab a piece of ice and put it in your mouth. Hold it against the bite with your tongue to numb the pain and reduce swelling. Infection is a possibility, so brush your teeth and tongue as soon as you get a chance and rinse with antiseptic mouthwash. Ingrown Toenails -- To relieve the pain, soak the afflicted piggie in a solution of hot water mixed with a tablespoon or two of Epsom salt. To prevent infection, apply an antibiotic lotion such as Neosporin. Wear flip-flops or sandals to let the toe breathe. You can try to trim the nail, but if it's already cutting into the skin, don't do it. You run the risk of infection. Have the doctor deal with it. Acne -- Tea tree oil applied to zits three times a day boosts healing and helps prevent infection. In addition, take zinc supplements of 50 milligrams daily. Take the same dose two or three times a day if the blemishes are really bad. Lavender oil also works well in place of tea tree oil. |
