Dr. Katz's Flavor-Full Diet :Aug 24, 2007If you want to lose weight so badly you can almost taste it, Dr. David Katz has written the perfect diet book for you. The nationally renowned health expert and Yale professor firmly believes that your taste buds can help you shed those extra pounds -- but only if you use them properly. This is the premise he explores in his ninth book to date, Dr. David Katz’s Flavor-Full Diet, which was released in paperback earlier this week. (To find out more information about Dr. David Katz and his online diet plan, click here .) "When you distribute flavors thoughtfully over the course of the day, quite simply, you fill up on fewer calories," Dr. Katz says. "That really is the key to weight loss and lasting weight control." According to Dr. Katz, his scientifically-proven meal plan is based on a very important but little-known concept called sensory-specific satiety. Essentially, this refers to the tendency for people to stay hungry longer when they consume a greater variety of flavors. For a simple example of sensory-specific satiety in action, Dr. Katz refers to the traditional holiday feast. "On Thanksgiving, I customarily eat that big feast to the point that I am so stuffed I have to lay down my fork, put my hand on my stomach and moan and groan that I am so full I couldn’t eat another bite," Dr. Katz admits. "And then, of course, the next words out of my mouth are: ‘What’s for dessert?’" Though people often make jokes about an extra stomach or a hollow leg, Dr. Katz assures us that neither he nor any of his colleagues in the medical community have ever uncovered such phenomenon. He says the actual explanation for why we can always find room for dessert is really much more interesting. Basically, we stay hungry longer and keep eating any time our flavor categories shift.
