Reel in the Benefits of Fish! :Aug 15, 2007Fish is nature's most abundant source of an essential fat called omega-3. Fish concentrate this special fat when they eat algae and other marine life. Omega-3 fats are most noted for their ability to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
How does fish oil benefit those with diabetes? Many people with diabetes also have problems with high levels of blood fats called triglycerides and/or low levels of the protective HDL cholesterol. Fish oil can effectively lower triglycerides and raise HDL levels in people with and without diabetes. Finally, omega-3 fats appear to improve the body's responsiveness to insulin by creating a softer cell membrane, which allows sugar to more easily pass into the cell. Preliminary studies are showing fish oil can reduce this common problem of insulin resistance. Although concern had been raised in the past that fish oil may worsen blood sugar control, this concern has been put to rest. Newer studies confirm that fish oil does not raise blood sugar levels. How much do you need? To obtain the equivalent of two fatty fish meals per week, a supplement containing 600 mg of omega-3 fat can be taken each day. Most fish oil capsules contain 300 mg of omega-3 per capsule, so two per day would be needed. To find out the actual amount of omega-3 fat in a fish oil supplement, check the label and add up the EPA + DHA + “other omega-3.” |
