Peanut Butter & Crisco: The Shame Continues! :

Jul 26, 2007

The Count of Many Crisco Sandwiches
To this day, I still want to gag when I think about this and have even now gained a sincere animosity for the parent who ALLOWED this... Throughout grade school, there was an overweight boy who ate the same thing for lunch EVERY single day of the week... (of course I had no clue then what a calorie or fat gram was... I just knew it was NOT right). His mother packed him peanut butter and Crisco sandwiches! Yep, shortening?! With peanut butter... on Wonder Bread, too! What the heck was she thinking??

Put a Lid on It!
When I worked at Dairy Queen, a pregnant employee unveiled the tastiest discovery to me. She took a lid for a large confection, filled it 3/4 of the way with whipped dairy topping. Then she added a ladle of strawberry topping (about half a cup) to that. And the best part was the crushed Oreo cookies she then added -- about half a cup of those as well. Then you mixed the three together and ate it immediately -- so that the Oreos were still crunchy; it was awesome! The first time I tried it I couldn't eat the whole thing, but then as time went on I was able to accomplish it.

Being in the army, you see quite a few random things, but nothing prepared me for the time at the canteen in Kosovo... Dinner consisted of mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, roast beef, broccoli, peas, carrots, stuffing and a bucket of gravy. Dessert was sponge cake and custard. Sounds lush, right? Well, not after seeing a close friend pour his dessert ON TOP of his dinner, and then proceeding to wolf down the lot. "Well it all goes down the same hole, doesn't it?" was his justification. Live and let live.

Two-for-One Special
I have two items to share. As a kid, my sister (who is 41 now) used to make an after-school snack that she called her "special" -- it was about a 1/3 cup (that's a guess, but probably close to the amount she used) of oatmeal (it didn't matter to her if it was "quick oats" or the regular plain oatmeal that you cooked) with about four "big spoons" (you know, those big serving spoons) of sugar plus milk to fill up a regular drinking glass. She'd mix it up and eat it without cooking it at all! She insisted that it was good, but I tried it and couldn't keep from gagging on it. It was gross! Another thing we did when we were kids was to drink soda with a licorice straw. We'd get Twizzlers, bite off the very ends and use them as straws. When we were finished drinking, we'd eat the Twizzlers. I have to admit, I've done that as an adult.
