More Than One Reason to Do Yoga :

Jul 08, 2007

It's common knowledge that yoga is a powerful and effective physical workout. But it's much more than that -- it's the perfect exercise.

When you're healthy on the inside, it shows on the outside. eDiets offers a choice of 24 super diets so no matter your preferences, we have a diet to fit YOUR needs. To give us a try simply click here to fill out a free profile.

Developed more than 5,000 years ago by meditating monks in the isolated jungles of India, yoga has been proven to tone the endocrine system, strengthen and stretch connective tissues, enhance bone density, strengthen the lungs (through ujjayi breathing), soothe the central nervous system, increase circulation, and more importantly, open the energy pathways -- or "nadis" -- in the body, allowing the practitioner more energy, more peace, better health and increased happiness (some would even say mild euphoria). The ultimate goal of the ancient yogi was not, however, to attain the perfect physique (although they did). That was simply an extra perk toward attaining their ultimate goal: the uninterrupted experience of bliss.

The ancient yogis aimed to perfect the body in order to remove physical frailty as a potential obstacle toward attaining perfect happiness. They realized that the body can be perfected through discipline, clear and rational thinking and loving care. Once their bodies were perfected and no longer troubled them with illness, injury or pain, they were free to pursue higher forms of fulfillment through service and meditation. The yoga that is practiced today still has the potential to perfect your body, and then serve as a means to maintain your perfected physique.

It's important to be aware of why you want to perfect the body . From a yogic point of view, the perfect body is attainable and sustainable through the practice of yoga. But it's not attainable if the body shape is the only goal. Vanity is a harsh master. You must consider your higher purpose in life and let your focus be there. Your physical perfection then becomes a stepping stone -- a tool, a facility -- toward this larger goal.

Whether your ultimate goal is attaining enlightenment, finding true love, serving the world through your job or charity or simply to live a full and complete life, know that it is possible to attain a perfect body and move past body obsession and toward happiness.
