Feel like you’re caught in a fashion rut as a plus-sized gal? There’s no reason to be, with more fabulous fashion options than ever. All it takes is a little shopping savvy and a few terrific style tips!

Sixty-two percent of American women wear a size 14 or larger, so it’s no surprise plus-size shops and online stores are sprouting up at a rapid pace. And with this influx come more variety, better selection and the accessibility of fashion that suits every woman’s individual taste. It’s a great time to be a plus-sized shopper!

Apparent in this market more than ever is the great presence of the latest high-fashion trends with plus-size availability. Christine Thompson of Torrid , a specialty chain created especially to meet the needs of hip, fashion-forward plus-size females, says one of the looks to seek out this season includes various cuts and styles of denim. “Torrid has translated that trend for the plus-size customer,” she says. “Skinny-leg denim is a hot trend now, which Torrid offers in a variety of washes. Another key trend this season is pencil skirts, which we have in several styles. Some of our pencil skirts have button detailing along the back, extended tab waists, slits and other details.”

Thompson notes that once you find shapes, cuts and silhouettes that work best with your shape, stick with them and look for similar styles. But if you see a new trend that interests you, you shouldn’t shy away from experimenting.

“Don’t think that a trend necessarily isn’t for you. Try, try, try,” Thompson suggests. “It’s the only way to know how your body type will look in a trend. We encourage all of our customers to try on as much as they’d like when they’re in our stores. The tendency is to immediately think that certain styles won’t work. Many women are amazed at what turns out looking great on them.”

Plus-Size Diva Dress Tips

  • Choose monochromatic outfits, with tops and bottoms in the same color; to elongate the body, wear opaque hose that match your skirt.
  • Stay away from chokers and opt for long necklaces to make the neck seem elongated.
  • Draw attention to shapely shoulders with boat neck tops and styles that go slightly off the shoulder.
  • Avoid shoes with heavy buckles, bows or T-straps, because they create a widening effect.
  • Flare-bottom pants or jeans create the illusion of narrower hips.
  • A gently pointed toe is more flattering than a round or square toe.
  • Skirt hems should extend over your boots to create vertical length.
  • Stay away from handbags that are tiny or too dainty, as they will not complement your voluptuous figure.
  • Although ankle boots are always a safe bet, if it’s a knee-length boot you seek, be sure they it’s made with the plus-size calf in mind.
