Reality of Plastic Surgery :

Jun 13, 2007

Roughly 11 million cosmetic surgeries were performed last year in the U.S., according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

It's frightening that many of the people receiving these procedures haven’t done their due diligence and get much of their information -- and expectations -- from unrealistic television programs. Also, many doctors are certified for these procedures in nothing more than a weekend crash course.

Everywhere you look the media shows images of impeccably chiseled bodies, flawlessly famous faces and picture-perfect celebrities who defy the wear-and-tear of time. Unrealistic levels of beauty are perpetrated on the American public, while proliferating the “quick fix” mentality propagated by our fast food, instant coffee and weekend facelift society. The search for the elusive “fountain of youth” precedes this country, but never before has it been put so blaringly in the public eye. These makeover shows create a false sense of recovery time and expected results from cosmetic surgery and present a total overhaul idea that can be dangerous, according to Dr. Saunders.

“In general, cosmetic surgery is safe, but when you get into long, multiple procedures it gets slightly more dangerous,” warns Dr. Saunders. “It does fantastic things for people, but let’s talk about safety, reality and options first.”

The reality of plastic surgery is that safety should come first. You can save money by “bundling procedures,” but you also increase the risk of complications. Also, you have to find a doctor who is ASPS certified to perform the surgery, so he can go through all your options before you make a final decision, advises Dr. Saunders.
