‘Tis the season to go to a wedding
Tra la la la la, here comes the bride;
Are you to a wedding heading?
Tra la la la la, such a romantic ride.

Weddings, romance and gorgeous gowns: Who could ask for anything more? Well, I could, and so could those brides and wedding guests who have suffered from these classic wedding-day woes:

  • A bra that hurts your shoulders or has straps that show under your gown
  • Lovely lingerie that looked oh-so-pretty when you bought it – but feels miserably scratchy and itchy on your sensitive skin.
  • Underwear that starts slippin’ and slidin’ halfway through the ceremony.

    “I wanted to scratch myself during the entire ceremony!” I remember my best friend confiding during the reception at her wedding. I felt guilty, because she and I had gone shopping together for her bridal lingerie – and I had been the one to talk her into buying the gorgeous, lace-covered bra and panties ensemble that had caused her itchy misery.

    I have also attended weddings where brides were blissfully unconscious of the fact that their bra straps were showing (until they saw the photographs a month later!). And then there’s the bride whose panties started to slip down her backside “So much for something borrowed and something blue,” I overheard her panicked whisper post-ceremony to her mother. “Your blue silk undies were gorgeous – but they’re two sizes too big! Walk behind me so no one will see me wiggle when I try to get them back into place!”

    Having experienced the “always a bridesmaid but never a bride” phenomenon more than a dozen times, I can testify that it’s not only the bride who doesn’t always love her lingerie. I personally hate it when a bride asks her bridesmaids to wear dresses with skinny little shoulder straps. I have problems finding a strapless bra. Most strapless bras either slide down my back or are so tight that I can’t even take a deep breath.

    Of course it’s not just bras that cause wedding day lingerie issues. I know brides who insisted on donning so-called “shape wear,” which in a former day were known as girdles. These garments may give you an enviably slim stomach – but they don’t make it exactly comfortable to walk prettily down the aisle. Nor do they make it easy to stand through a long reception line.
