Improve Your Sex Life with Yoga and Pilates :

Jun 06, 2007

I think it’s safe to say that everyone wants to be happy. Some of us find happiness in people; others seek it out in places or things. But the sages and wise men (and women) have known since time began that finding true happiness or contentment is an inside job.

One way of unlocking our innate happiness and sexual fulfillment is through disciplines such as yoga and Pilates. Both are forms of exercise that unify the body with mind, spirit and self. And both ultimately can improve your sex life.

“A regular yoga practice can enhance your sex life in many ways. It opens and connects the energy centers (chakras), which are involved in the orgasmic response. Through yoga you learn to breathe deeply, and breathing is the key to feeling more sensation and having a more complete orgasm,” says Dr. Deborah Anapol, Ph.D. in clinical psychology and author of The Seven Natural Laws of Love.Yoga also enhances the body’s flexibility, which, in turn, helps one's sexual experience. Many yoga and Pilates poses are designed to stretch the legs and open the pelvis. “If the pelvis is not flexible, it is harder for the energy to move through it. Energy must move through the pelvis in order for the nerves to relax for an orgasm. The single block to orgasm is tension,” says Bruce Frantzis, author of Tai Chi: Health for Life, and yoga and Tai chi instructor in California.

The practice of Pilates also promotes the sexual experience through slightly different methods. As a matter of fact, the founder of Pilates, Joseph Pilates, created this method of exercise as a way to heal and strengthen his body after years of illness. Many of the exercises focus on the abdominal muscles that support and strengthen the spine. They also have the ability to enhance one's sexual drive.

“Pilates strengthens your core and your pelvis, which will increase stamina and endurance for sexual activities,” says Kymberly Byrnes, Studio Director of Pulse Pilates in Boca Raton, Fla. “It also increases your energy level and helps flexibility for different sexual positions. I recently had a client that had major back surgery, and he wanted to get back on the golf course. After coming to me twice a week for two months, his abdominals were so strong that his golf game improved.”
