When I first started running, I ran to the sounds of nature mixed withtraffic. When my mileage increased, so did the need to distract myselffrom the tedium. So I added big, bulky, battery-operated headphones withbuilt-in FM/AM radio. The commercials were unbearable, and I switched toa heavy cassette player strapped to my waist. The tapes would skip, stutter and eventually wear out. After that came the first-generationiPod, which made running more fun but still had inherent complicationssuch as where to stash it in a pair of skimpy running shorts. The iPodMini was lighter and better but still required a pouch/clip, and it wasdifficult to select playlists while running. And then, along came the iPod Shuffle 2.0, a teensy-weensy,postage-stamp-sized digital music player that lets you wear up to 240songs -- on your tank top. Yep. I clip the burnt-orange, aluminum device tomy shirt, insert the easy-fitting ear buds, and off I go. The Shuffle has done more for my running than I ever imagined. The"shuffle" part of my playlist delivers randomly selected favorite tunesthat alter my pace -- in a good way. Mick Jagger's fast and furious "StartMe Up" may segue into Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run," followed by TomPetty's "Running Down a Dream" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Queen. Withmy pulse still pounding, McCartney's "Band on the Run" kicks up the nextmile and Pearl Jam's "Evenflow" brings it home. And so forth and so on.Every run is a new musical experience that translates into a differenttwist on an old run. Treadmill running keeps rockin' when pop follows rap, which follows theinevitable Chariots of Fire theme song. You just about can't get tiredof the run when you don't know what song in what genre is going to pulsethrough your ears and power your feet, heart and lungs. Details: Size does matter, and there's nothing smaller than Apple's 1 GBShuffle, which is 1.62 inches long and weighs about half an ounce. It'seasy to download music from iTunes, and the Shuffle rocks for up to 12continuous hours. Choose from cool, metallic colors: green, pink, orange, metal and blue. With a flick of the thumb, it's a breeze to adjust the volume, pause, play, skip forward or repeat a song just played. The headphone jacksdouble as the dock connector and connect to your Mac or Windows PC viaa USB adapter. It charges while it syncs new tracks. |
